AI is changing the technical lead role in pension funds in a very specific way: you’re no longer just owning platforms, integrations, and reporting pipelines. You’re now expected to understand how to safely apply LLMs and RAG to member service, document retrieval, regulatory search, and internal knowledge workflows without breaking governance, auditability, or data boundaries.

That means the job is shifting from “keep systems running” to “design systems that can explain themselves.” In pension funds, that matters because every answer has legal, financial, and reputational weight.

    You need to know how retrieval actually works: chunking, embeddings, hybrid search, reranking, metadata filters, and citation generation.     Useful at the margin useless as a core skill for a technical lead in pensions. Prompts change weekly; architecture governance evaluation and access control last much longer.

  • Fine-tuning everything

    Most pension use cases do not need model training first they need better retrieval cleaner content and tighter controls. Fine-tuning before fixing knowledge quality usually wastes time.

  • Generic AI demos with no business boundary

    Don’t spend months building a “chat with PDFs” toy that ignores permissions citations or operational workflows. In pensions relevance comes from compliance-safe usefulness not novelty.
