If you lead lending engineering in 2026, the job is to keep credit decisions fast, compliant, and auditable while ML models become part of the core product. That means learning enough machine learning to make sound architecture calls, challenge data science proposals, and ship systems that regulators and risk teams can live with.

This is still the highest-leverage ML skill in lending. You need to understand how payment history, utilization, income signals, bank transaction patterns, device data, and bureau attributes turn into features that improve approval quality without creating leakage or bias.
For a technical lead, this matters because bad features create bad models and expensive losses. Learn how to build point-in-time correct datasets, handle missingness intentionally, and separate training-time features from production-time features.

In lending, accuracy is not enough. You need to know AUC, KS statistic, precision/recall at approval cutoffs, calibration, reject inference basics, and how to evaluate models against business constraints like loss rate and approval rate.
As a technical lead, you will be asked whether a model is safe to deploy before it ever reaches production. If you can read evaluation reports and ask the right questions about thresholding, drift sensitivity, and segment performance, you become much harder to replace.

This is one of the most practical explainability references available. Read the SHAP sections closely if your team builds scorecards or uses tree-based models in underwriting.
